Table tree
A table tree is a table that expands to show nested levels of information.
When to use
- Nested data, such as epics that contain stories, or folders that contain files.
- A hierarchy where people need to see the parent to understand the children.
- A structure people expand and collapse as they work, instead of reading it all at once.
When not to use
- Flat data. A tree suggests nesting, so people will look for levels that are not there.
- A hierarchy more than about three levels deep. The indentation runs out of room.
- Grouping that would work better as a filter or a sort.
Content
What to write, and what to leave out.
- Label parents and children in the same way, so the levels look like one set.
- Keep the first level short enough that people can see the whole structure without scrolling.
